Agricultural Art: Japanese Rice Murals

Japanese Rice Murals
Japanese Rice Murals

Extraordinary murals across rice paddies in Japan, made with different colored rice had produced an amazing artwork.
No dye or any artificial materials - it is all natural hand work that was created by planting purple and yellow-leafed kodaimai rice along with the local green-leafed tsugaru roman variety.
The rice is planted in May and the creations are at their best in September.

The tradition began in 1993 in Inakadate village, north of Tokyo, home to less than 9000 people, which now boasts the largest and finest artwork of its kind.
It started as a project to revitalise the local economy and now over than 15,000 visitors travel to see the creation every year.
