May it be the breathtaking vistas or the farms and small villages that look like they were meant to be painted, or the clear air and green scenery, or maybe the fact that all of this beauty is about 20 minutes from the city of Adelaide, there is no way to stay indifferent when you travel by.
One of the things I like the most about the Hills is the perfect balance between nature and civilization. It is impressive to see how the harmony between man and the environment, tradition and modernization is kept and preserved.
One admirable example is the architecture of Max Pritchard which is unaffected by transient trends and fashions but instead leading a creative dialog with the environment.
Max Pritchard grew up on Kangaroo Island where the requirements of the practical led to his discovery of the joy of creation through materials and construction.
An impressive work of him is the Bridge House.

A winter creek, billabong, large river red gums, dense wattles and rocky banks called for a house that would "touch the earth lightly".
The solution - a narrow bridge like structure spanning the creek providing the experience of living amongst the trees in an almost untouched beautiful setting.

ReplyDeleteFew years ago, when we lived in MD, USA we visited the Fallingwater in Pennsylvania. Take a look:

We even have a book about that.
Funny, sometimes you discover your neigbors when they are far away...
