The Townhouse

This townhouse by Elding Oscarson, reminded me of the Borneo-Sporenburg project in the Netherlands.
But while in Borneo-Sporenburg the main idea was a repetition of the same type of a traditional Dutch canal house but with a maximum architectural variation, here the townhouse stands alone in its modern design between a very old neighboring buildings in Landskrona, Sweden.

In the words of the architects: "The building relates to the surroundings in scale, proportion and in the way it adds to the established rhythm of low and tall buildings along the street. A perpendicularly inserted crow-step gabled house a few lots down the street is a particularly important ancestor. Yet, our aim is to create a razor sharp contrast."

I find it refreshing and a bit provocative. Not sure I would have loved it if I was living in the house next door though.  But, yes, I think it gives the street a special flavor in a way. It will be interesting to see the street transformation in the next years.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts. How do you find this contrast? Do you think it contributes to the old street or is it too much of a contradiction?

  1. I find it an unnecessary violation of a classic street view. The charm of old is gone. If I were a neighbor, I'd do everything I could to prevent it.
I'm not an art critic, though :)

  2. No it doesn´t contribute to the old houses of course.
But in my opinion the world will not go further if we just always say No or if we do not open our minds for new things. We have to see the whole. In this case "the whole" is a wonderful solution of bringing the old and the new together. I´m sure it will be appreaciated a lot in 100 or 200 years.
I´d love to live in one of the old houses - just next to the new one. And to be part of "the whole". ;)
