Saturday Finds:: Ampersands @ Etsy

I hope you're not tired of me talking about typography!

When dealing with typography, one of the things I find very interesting is visual symbols and especially the symbol Ampersand.
I enjoy discovering the various use for it in design, art and interiors (see for example my last post about Caitlin Wilson's Gallery Wall with decorations of the letter W and an Ampersand sign).

Here are some expressions of the logogram Ampersand as it seen through the eyes of Etsy artisans.

From upper left corner: Ampersand 2 by Barbaershop, Gold Helvetica Ampersand Necklace by Sadie, , Large Wood Letter/Symbol Ampersand by Signs of Vintage, Ampersand Moleskine Notebook by Crook and Villain, Ampersand Monogram Dish Towel by Sourdough, And...... by Said in Stone, Initial Ampersand - Brass Vintage Letterpress Necklace by Gwen Delicious Jewelry, Stucco Ampersand by Tucker Reece, Lucky Number 7 And Ampersand by Precious Past Times, Aluminum Ampersand For Wall or Shelf by Atlas Space and Place, And. Ampersand Cross Stitch Pattern by andwabisabi, Wedding Sign - Wood Ampersand by OldNewAgain, Ampersand by NineDigitPress, The Super Ampersand // XLarge by Lorem and Ipsum, Ampersand Hand Screenprinted Poster - Coral by Nell Smith, Ampersand Appliqued Burlap Pillow by Hedy Regal Designs

By the way, does anyone know how ampersand symbol & was formed?

Happy Shiny Saturday!

  2. I'm a fan of typography too, but the origin of the ampersand has never crossed my mind - until now. There's a good Wiki link that explains: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ampersand

  13. the ampersand is my favorite extra, i try to use it when possible and also love other ligatures like the ct or the fft. I believe the & is a ligature of et. You can still see it in some versions (like the one in these comments).

  15. Oh, and the origin of the word "ampersand" comes from the expression "and per se". I love ampersands!
