The Ghost Writer

Do you enjoy going to the movies by yourself?
I really like it from time to time.
I somehow find the experience of watching a movie alone much more intense than when I'm in a company. I can't really figure why it is so.

Yesterday was cold and wet and I planned to go out and watch Cairo Time which is relatively an easy and short film (can someone explain me why the majority of the movies nowadays are longer than 120 minutes? much too long to my taste). The romantic plot and the warm, exotic location of it - Cairo, seemed like a good choice for such a cold day.

I was late and eventually ended up watching The Ghost Writer.

It was the exact opposite of what I was after - a thriller (usually not my cup of tea), which takes place on an isolated island, in a very cold time of season.
Even so, I enjoyed each and every minute of it and liked it from every angle. It is one of the most elegant and aesthetic films I've seen recently.
Its setting is so impressive. The use of the weather, the alienation and isolation feeling of being on an island, the impact of the concrete house and the color scheme of the whole movie, are magnificent.
Set aside the story, the story behind the story and the story of the making of it, which are all interesting enough, the cinematography of The Ghost Writer and its sense of beauty are good enough reasons for watching it.

Would love to hear your impressions if you have watched it!
(And also please share your recommendations for other beautiful movies! I'm in a need for more!)

  2. I like to go to the movies by myself but somehow feel rather selr indulgent for doing it - yes I know WEIRD!!! - The Ghost Writer is on my list so I should just take myself along & watch it!!! Life is very hard st the moment so a trip to the movies could be well in order I think!

Hire out "The Painted Veil" sometime if you haven't seen it. One of the most poignant & beautiful films both cinematically & emotionally. Naomi Watts & Edward Norton play their parts really well.

Have a lovely weekend, no matter our silly weather at the moment!! TK xx

  3. Loved The Ghost Writer, though the premise was pretty silly, the house was wonderful!

Have you seen The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? The acting is wonderful and I enjoyed it despite the sordid view of life... Pan's Labyrinthe... Fight Club...anything by Pedro Almodovar?
(we watch films about four nights a week, video projector, sofas, cuppa tea...)

  4. I have seen this film and was also impressed by the cinematography and the many intricate visual details.
Strangely, I cant remember the whole plot yet, I can visualize in my mind most of the scenes.

As far as recommendation, sadly, most of the movies making there way here are junk but, you should try this one if you haven't so far (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/girl_with_the_dragon_tattoo/)

  5. Kerry - You're going to love it!

Tiffani - Just ordered The Painted Veil from the library. Thanks!! Hope things gets better soon. I'm sure the weather got something to do with it... it must!

Tricia - Almodovar is one of my most beloved directors! Love every and any work of his and always waiting for more.
Video projector, sofas and a cuppa sound too perfect to me!! Awesome!!

Yaron - I laughed when reading your comment as when I came back home I could hardly explain what was the story really about... Seemed too shallow for me. I have to admit I read whatever I could about it but still think the story is not the main thing but the idea and the environment Polanski created.

As for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - what can I say - I was about to see it several time, I have the book at home as a present from a friend, but I was... hmmm... afraid to even open it! Seem too scary for my gentle soul!!
Isn't it? Should I give it a chance?

Thanks for the recommendations! Keep them coming!

  7. I liked it a lot. I read that all those wonderful moody exterior shots were digitized in. Amazing. I think it was actually filmed in Scandinavia somewhere.
