Nostalgic, beautiful photos from the State Library of New South Wales collection showing little scenes from Bohemian Sydney.
From the late 19th century to the early 1970s, there was a distinctive bohemian subculture in Sydney. Alternative thinkers gathered in private houses, clubs and coffee houses. Some of the best known bohemian hangouts were Kings Cross and the area around Rowe Street (demolished in the 1970s to make way for the MLC Centre). One of these Rowe Street cafes, the Lincoln Coffee Lounge, is considered the birthplace of the Sydney Push.
Doesn't it always seem like in the old times, everything looked more glamorous, with more passion and elegancy? Even drinking coffee looks more purposeful.
Of course it is pure romanticism, but I would love the option to step back in time, to this era when things looks new and possible and even smoking cigarettes seemed harmless....
Beautiful photographs... hipsters in days of yore!
ReplyDeleteI agree it all looks so much more decadent & exotic!!! I am a bit of a boho myself, love an eclectic mix and this is just fab!!! TK xx
ReplyDeleteGorgeous selection of old photographs! They're beautiful.
ReplyDeleteyou are right - back then everything looked more glamorous!! :) and the pictures are great!!
ReplyDeletehow is your week so far? good?
thank you for such a beautiful post!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on that, would love to feel the new excitement in the air and to have a smoke in that dress. Beautiful and fun photos!
ReplyDeleteWhat a marvelous post.
ReplyDeleteIt actually WAS better. The cigarettes were less harmful, as one wouldn't feel guilty smoking. Also, no STD could kill in the late XIX century.
the current times seem to be lacking a certain je ne sais quoi in comparison to the life in these images. it will be interesting to see whether people look back on this decade nostalgically in the future just as we look to earlier decades.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, I'm in the city tomorrow, think I may have to call in for a look .... they really were the days and I still love Kings Cross !!!
